(The Gehenna Press was Leonard Baskin's private press, where he demonstrated
his great skill with fine paper, Centaur type, and the Columbian hand
30 poems and six woodcuts hand-printed on Dover handmade paper by the artist. The cuts are printed from the original blocks, the final one coloured. The binding is Swedish hand-marbled paper over boards, self endpapers. 250 copies printed, all signed and numbered by poet and artist. Many copies are marked on their preliminary or final blank leaves by pale rings, probably resulting from paste being forced through the paper in the pressing stage. This copy has these ring marks on the front pastedown and free endpapers, else FINE and unopened. £530.
G2: Another Copy: EXTRA ILLUSTRATED. In 1998, Leonard Baskin visited Devon and while there he added a full-page water colour painting of a fantastical bird to a few copies of this work which belonged to Ted Hughes. There are thought to be 4 thus. Signed and dated at the foot of the page in addition to the colophon. A very FINE association copy. £880.

Press was the private press of Miss Olwyn Hughes. Through the 1970's,
she commissioned work from some of the finest craftsmen in the fields
of paper-making, letterpress printing, and hand book binding. All these
productions are first editions of their content, unless specified otherwise.)
150 copies printed on Italian handmade paper at the Daedalus Press, Norfolk, bound in full black calf by Zaehnsdorf, in a cloth-covered slipcase, t.e.g., self endpapers. Signed and numbered by the author. First edition of a work written in 1964. Some loss of gold from the title blocking, and slight rubbing from the tight slip, but a very good sound copy. £180.
R2: EARTH-MOON, poems and drawings by Ted Hughes. The Rainbow Press, 1976.
An almost square book, c. 5.25 inches, 67 pp.
226 copies printed by Sebastian Carter at Rampant Lions Press on hand-made Barcham Green paper. First edition of these 31 poems and 11 drawings, all copies signed and numbered by the author. Bound by Davis & Hodges, either in full blue calf with a moon motif and title blocked in palladium, or in blue Japanese paper with the moon-motif cut from natural cork and inlaid. Both bindings housed in a Japanese paper-covered slipcase, Japanese patterned endpapers. Printed throughout in black and slate blue. Top edge silver-gilt. A little gem. This copy is one of the 26 lettered copies printed for the poet and bound in full calf. FINE, in good slip somewhat faded. An association copy. £460.
R3: ANOTHER COPY, this one in the paper binding, which is in no way inferior to the leather version, and is also one of the 26 lettered copies printed for the poet. FINE in fine slip. £460.
R4: MOORTOWN ELEGIES, 34 poems by Ted Hughes with a drawing by Leonard Baskin. The Rainbow Press, London, 1978. 13.5x9.5 inches, 60pp.
This is one of 26 lettered copies from a total edition of 175, signed and numbered by the poet, designed and printed by Will Carter at Rampant Lions Press. The paper was hand-made by Barcham Green, and the book was bound in full orange morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe with Japanese patterned endpapers and cloth slipcase, t.e.g. Nicely hand-lettered with the author's drawing of a bull blocked in gold on the cover. The drawing of a meadow by Leonard Baskin ends the book. An impressive edition of an important collection. FINE in fine slip. £1,080.

One of 200 copies signed and numbered by the poet, designed and printed by Will Carter of Rampant Lions Press on Italian hand-made paper, and bound by Grey of Cambridge in full blue calf with patterned Japanese endpapers, t.e.g., in a cloth slipcase. Very slight darkening of the leather along the joints, else FINE in fine slip. £180.
R5b: ANOTHER COPY, one of the author's presentation copies, number 4, with EXTRA INSCRIPTION consisting of a 4 line stanza beginning "Adam lay born" and signature on the half-title page. FINE copy in fine slipcase. £280.

One of 70 copies from a total edition of 180 printed on Charing hand-made paper by Sebastian Carter of Rampant Lions Press and bound in full treed calf by W.T. Morrell, self endpapers, t.e.g. in a cloth-covered slipcase (slightly sun-faded.) A very impressive collection and production, still beautiful despite some dulling of the leather and slight darkening of the spine. NEAR FINE in very good slip. £620.
R8: A SET OF 4 BROADSIDES, each one of the poems which had appeared in Moortown Elegies: Couples Under Cover, February 17th, Ravens, Teaching a Dumb Calf.
Printed for The Rainbow Press in 1979 by Will Carter of Rampant Lions Press from the standing type from the book, with only the title changed, and on the same paper. (Sagar, A57) Signed and numbered by the poet. 18.5x13inches. FINE. The set £300.

Printed by Sebastian Carter on Zerkall mould-made paper and bound in a Fabriano paper wrapper. A beautiful pamphlet in FINE, as new, condition. £110.
R10: SPRING SUMMER AUTUMN WINTER, 20 poems by Ted Hughes, Rainbow Press,
London, 1973. First edition of all except the five Autumn poems which
had been published by Richard Gilbertson in 1968. 8.5x9 inches (landscape).
Beautiful design by Sebastian Carter, 140 copies printed on hand-made 'Dover' paper, signed and numbered by the poet. The binding is in limp natural calf in a cork-covered slipcase. This copy has suffered some attack from stains and spotting , so while the text pages are in fine condition, the binding is sound but somewhat soiled. Hence the price of £175.

R12: CRYSTAL GAZER and other poems, by Sylvia Plath, with a self-portrait

uncollected poems including the celebrated poem "Mirror". One
of 300 copies bound in quarter buckram with Japanese paper over boards.

R13: ANOTHER COPY. This copy is one of the first 100 that were designated for a binding in full cape leather, but has been left UNBOUND. The book is sewn and the top edge gilded, but the bindery work ended there, offering an excellent opportunity for a bookbinder or collector to execute or commission a fine binding. One of 250 SIGNED copies letterpress printed by the Salient Seedling Press in Baskerville type on Frankfurt Cream paper in hand-made Roma paper covers. F2: RAIN-CHARM FOR THE DUCHY and other laureate poems by Ted Hughes, Faber & Faber, 1992. Limited to 280 SIGNED copies, of which 30 numbered I - XXX were reserved for the poet. This copy is ONE OF THE POET'S 30 PRESENTATION COPIES. There are two volumes together in a slipcase. Volume 1 contains the title poem and 5 other laureate poem sequences, hardcover, and volume 2 is a supplemental pamphlet entitled THE UNICORN The Fortieth Anniversary of the Accession of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Both volumes are signed and numbered by the poet. FINE as new and unopened. £180.
V&A: BROADSIDE on the occasion of an exhibition of Leonard Baskin's illustrations to poems by Ted Hughes, Victoria & Albert Museum,1979. Poem IN THE BLACK CHAPEL under a PORTRAIT HEAD WITH A FANTASTICAL BIRD ON TOP. This copy is one of the special limited edition of 150 copies, SIGNED by the poet and the artist, printed in 1980. 76x50.5cm. For this edition, the text was reset and the colour-printing was improved. No edge tears or marks. This copy is FINE and as new, having been stored since 1980 in a sealed tube. £250.
